Embracing Healthier Habits

I know we all think and talk about goals that we want to achieve at the beginning of each year.  However, most often fall short of these goals, likely because they were not SMART.  SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound.  Successful goals are clearly stated, tied to an actual behavior, and tracked for progress.  For example, people resolve to lose weight and move more in the new year.  Unfortunately, this goal is usually derailed by early spring, oftentimes, because it is not SMART.

The SMART process for losing weight and moving more may look like this:
S: Lose a total of 20 pounds (specific)
M: Consume no more than 1800 calories and walk 5,000-10,000 steps each day (measurable)
A: Schedule daily walks or workouts on your calendar and have fruit for dessert instead of one with a lot of added sugar (attainable)
R: Achieving this goal will help you feel more energetic to participate in your favorite activities (relevant)
T: Goal will be reached in 12 months (time-bound)

You also have to know what kind of person you are.  Do not schedule workouts after work if you know you are usually tired after work.  Likewise, do not schedule early morning workouts if you are not a morning person.  These are unrealistic approaches that are sure to fail.

Do not get discouraged when your healthy eating habits are challenged.  It is okay to give in to temptation every once in a while.  You will undoubtedly get invited to dine out with family and friends at some point, but you can always plan to eat healthier at the following meal.  Try to anticipate these minor "bumps in the road" and create back-up plans.

Make sure you are showing yourself some love.  Treat yourself regularly to things/activities that you enjoy (e.g., reading a book or magazine while sipping tea or coffee, burning your favorite scented candle, getting a facial, manicure/pedicure, massage; or taking a relaxing bath).

Finally, know that achieving your goal is NOT the "finish line".  Think about building upon the original goal and develop a new target in order to keep the momentum going.  After all, embracing healthier habits should last for a lifetime!

Yours in good health,
